The dock powers the laptop with up to 90w, has a charging / interface port on the front, and 3x TB4 +!usb-a ports in the back. Mine is the sonnet one that I got for $300 and I use it with a 14” MacBook. REALLY hard to get right now and marked up like $100 if you can actually find it though 😓 It’s the same oem with Kensington’s choice of ports but they might do more work in maintaining the drivers / firmware since it is surface certified. If you want a surface dock compatible with thunderbolt 4 probably get the surface-focused Kensington one.
Dock 2 also gives you up to 120watt of power if you need it. I’ve also used both with a 3440 x1440p monitor without issue. I’ve used both to display 2x 4k60 without issue from a surface pro x. For external displays Dock 1 has 2x mini display ports and dock 2 has 2 x usb-c. Surface dock 1/2 don’t have have thunderbolt though.
If you require surface connect your choice is easy. I haven’t seen anyone identify the oem and I’m too lazy to open mine. Each vendor has done their little tweaks to the case accents or to the port arrangements on the back but they are largely the same. Lots of customized /rebranded versions from owc, Kensington, sonnet etc.
